Self-esteem quote

Our self esteem is influenced by our own accomplishments, but it's also influenced by the accomplishments of our group. So if we can latch on to groups that are successful, then we can feel better about ourselves.

The thing about self-esteem is that it's often too easily affected by outside influences. A compliment here and it soars up to the sky. A criticism there and it plummets again. Like a rollercoaster, it goes up and down, up and down. We feel great, then we feel terrible, and round and round it goes. And herein lies the problem. When our self-esteem is easily swayed or changed by others, we are open to huge swings in how we feel about ourselves.... The degrees to which people's self-esteem rises and falls when they are appraised by others varies. Some people's rollercoasters have less high points and less dips; others' rollercoasters are constantly up and down, preventing them from having a true sense of themselves. We all need the straight bits, the in-between stages, the calm patches between the ups and downs. They let us catch our breath and build up a sense of ourselves. We then construct an identity that is not made up of what others think of us; an identity that is okay in its own skin--an identity that can weather a compliment or a criticism without it sending the rollercoaster hurtling up or down.

Everything that happens to you is a reflection of what you believe about yourself. We cannot outperform our level of self-esteem. We cannot draw to ourselves more than we think we are worth.

Simply put, self-esteem is an overall evaluation of yourself. In any given moment, if I believe that I am a good person and am performing well, I will have high self-esteem. If I feel I've fallen short compared to what I could do or what others around me are doing, I will experience low self-esteem. We move through our days vacillating in response to how we are judging ourselves and how we are stacking up against others.

The simple fact is, given the same IQ and same opportunities, the person with high self-esteem enjoys more success than the person with low self-esteem. High self-esteem makes people keep trying. Low self-esteem causes people to not even try. After all, they aren't good enough.

Self-respect cannot be hunted. It cannot be purchased. It is never for sale. It cannot be fabricated out of public relations. It comes to us when we are alone, in quiet moments, in quiet places, when we suddenly realize that, knowing the good, we have done it; knowing the beautiful, we have served it; knowing the truth, we have spoken it.

One of the best springs of generous and worthy actions, is having generous and worthy thoughts of ourselves: whoever has a mean opinion of the dignity of his nature will act in no higher a rank than he has allotted himself in his own estimation.
